Problem Solved - posted by dg - on March 22 2008
During the last couple of weeks there have been some problems on the node where our server is located. However the problems have been solved and the server load has returned to normal.
Once again, I'd like to apologize for any inconvenience caused during the last couple of weeks.
High CPU Load - posted by dg - on March 09 2008
As you might know, our server is a Virtual Private Server (VPS). There are advantages and disadvantages when owning a VPS. The good part is that you don't have to worry yourself with hardware failures, since the provider takes care of that, and even if the node where our VPS is located suffers a hardware failure, our server can be restored within minutes on a different node from one of our VPS backup images.
The disadvantage is that when another VPS hogs the CPU on the node, we all suffer the consequences, and it affects the CPU load on our VPS. As some of the user noticed, there were some moments today when the server was pretty slow. This was caused due to a very high CPU load on the same node where our server is located. The provider has been informed about this, and is trying to track down which VPS is causing the problem.
I'm sorry for any inconvenience this might cause, but there is little I can do about it other then contact the provider.
Server Upgrade part 2 - posted by dg - on March 09 2008
The first phase of the server upgrade is complete. We got more dedicated RAM and disk space, so the overall performance of the server has improved.
However, I believe the migration from Fedora Core 2 to CentOS 5 will need to wait a while. This is a pretty difficult process which, if not handled properly, can cause a lot of headaches and downtime. So, for the time being, the second part of the server upgrade will be postponed until I have time to handle it properly.
Server Upgrade - posted by dg - on February 22 2008
It is time to upgrade the evil server. There is no fixed date for this upgrade, but it will probably happen in the next weekend (29.02.2008). Except from the fact that we will be getting more memory and more disk space, we will mmigrate from Fedora Core 2 to CentOS 5 64 bit. I will keep everyone informed in the forum, so if haven't so far, please register and start monitoring this topic.
In other news I took a short vacation during the last couple of weeks, but now I created all the accounts that were in the waiting list. If your account wasn't created on time I'm sorry, but sometimes even evil admins need some time off.
Problem with the Sign Up form - posted by dg - on January 24 2008
I just discovered a problem with the Sign Up form. Due to this problem, if you signed up for a free hosting account during the last week, well, I didn't really get your request, so you'll have to sign up again. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Happy New Year! - posted by dg - on January 01 2008
I just wanted to wish you all a Happy New Year! It should come as no surprise to many of you that it is, in fact, 2008 now. I know some of you are probably shocked to hear of this development, so let it sink in for a moment, then feel free to continue.
In other news, Evil Hosting is now three years old. That's right, we've been offering free, clean, quality hosting for three years. We've come a long way since we started, had our ups and downs, but in the end we managed to come through. I really hope this will be a good year for the hosting project and I hope I'll have time to introduce new technology, new evil projects and server upgrades.
In the end, I would like to give thanks to everyone who has been involved with the project over the years, in one way or another. You guys know who you are ;)
server download speed test - posted by dg - on November 25 2007
I created a 10Mb file that can be downloaded to test our server's speed before signing up, so that you know what to expect. Our server is located in Virginia. You can also try to ping our IP address or do a traceroute to get a more detailed report.
You can find the test file here. More info on how to run ping and traceroute here.
cPanel upgrade and x3 skin migration - posted by dg - on November 18 2007
cPanel has been upgraded to the last stable version (11.11.0-STABLE build 16999). Together with this upgrade all the users have been migrated to the new and improved x3 skin. So if you log in to your cPanel and things look a bit different, don't be afraid.
The x3 skin is supposed to be better, but just in case you don't like this skin, or preffer the one you had before, contact me and I'll migrate you back to the old skin.
server optimization - posted by dg - on November 17 2007
Since we had some problems with the server running out of memory, I decided to optimize Apache, MySQL and Exim memory usage. PHP has also been updated to version 5.1.4. There may have been some downtime during the process, but I doubt anyone noticed it.
In other news, since the whole idea behind this free hosting project is to create a community, I decided to bring back the Evil Forum. Anyone can register and start posting. If you have any suggestions regarding different forums you want, please post and let me know.
This is all for now.
downtime - posted by dg - on November 11 2007
Today, at 18.30 GMT+1, the server ran out of memory and stopped responding so we had to restart it, after more then 150 days of uptime. The incident caused 2 hours of downtime for which I am sorry. I'm not sure what caused this but I'll be looking into this in the next few days.
project news - posted by dg - on June 23 2007
Good news everyone, after some work, the signup script is back online! Yes, that means you can start asking for hosting once again. Also, if you sent us an e-mail during the last two weeks, asking for hosting and you didn't get a reply, you should use the signup form and apply once again.
In other news, due to some differences between me and Phase, my co-admin, I decided it was best if I ran the project alone, so Phase is no longer with Evil Hosting.
If you have time, make sure you stop for a friendly chat on our EvilIRC Network by connecting to irc.evilirc.org.
Warning for Yahoo, Hotmail and GMail users. - posted by dg - on June 20 2007
Due to the fact that we're so EVIL and AWESOME at the same time, the providers mentioned above fear us greatly, so they sometime don't deliver the e-mails we send to their users and the e-mails end up in the Bulk Mail Folders. So if you sent an e-mail to signup [at] evilhosting [dot] org asking for hosting and you have an e-mail with Yahoo, Hotmail or GMail, and you didn't get an answer from us, please check your bulk mail folders since the e-mail might be in there.
This is a futile atempt to stop us. In the end, we all know that EVIL shall prevail! ... just kidding ... or not ... who knows!?
working - posted by dg - on June 17 2007
As soon as we brougth the new version online we already have people asking for hosting. We are trying to reply to the e-mails but it might take some time.
In other news, while working on the site and surfing the web stats for the domain, I found out that someone named silence7 mentioned us on the beastieboys.com forum in a thread regarding free hosting. All I can say is that since I'm a big Beastie Boys fan myself it was a pretty cool thing to see. Anyway, in order to return the favour, I decided to post the links silence7 has in his signature:
- www.beastiemixes.com - Beastie Boys Remix Hosting.
- www.beastieboyslive.com - Live Show Downloads
- www.myspace.com/beastiemixes - Beastiemixes Myspace Page
This is all for now.
new design - posted by dg - on May 27 2007
It's been a long time since I posted any news or done any work on this project. It's been more then two years since this project has started and we've come pretty far. It's true, we've had our ups and downs. We had to deal with DDoS attacks, hacking attempts, abusive users, SPAM, fraud, pretty much all the bad things you can find online. But, with all this, we've kept on going.
It's also true we haven't accepted new users on the system, but with all the problems mentioned above, we decided that it's only fair to give our existing users the best service we can and to focus on the quality of the services, not on the quantity of the users we try to help with our services. After all, what good is it to have a free hosting account if it's not at all stable or reliable, right?
So, after more then half a year of absence we're once again opening our gates and we're accepting new users. The sign up script it's not functional yet, so if you really need hosting until we make it work, send an e-mail to signup [at] evilhosting [dot] org and we'll see what we can do about it. Make sure to mention the domain you need hosting for and what do you plan to do with it.
As you can see, we are currently working on the new design trying to bring the new version of the site online. This is version 2 of the site and of this project. Sit back, enjoy and if something is not working, we'll probably fix it soon.
